The man at left wears a feathered cape and headdress in brilliantly colored plumes, with finely rendered decorative tattoo patterns on his legs. The woman beside him holds a ceremonial cup and wears a lei and white draped garment, reflecting a european interpretation of hawaiian attire and customs. The term “sandwich islands” was historically used by european explorers—including captain james cook—to refer to the hawaiian islands. This engraving is part of a rare early visual record created during the period when europeans first documented pacific island cultures for audiences at home. Signed in the plate: “s.
