A late nineteenth-century Japanese Satsuma cylindrical vase, its slim vertical form entirely wrapped in scenes of samurai, nobles and court ladies. Raised on three discreet feet, the vase works as a narrative object and a patterned column within an interior setting.
As the vase turns, different episodes unfold: warriors before a castle, dignitaries seated beneath canopies, women and children walking by the river. Dense brocade bands and geometric panels link the scenes, creating a continuous decorative rhythm.
The underside bears the blue Shimazu crest and a red-and-gold “Satsuma-yaki” cartouche.
