Published in Amsterdam around 1805, the work comes from 'De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol' (“Humankind as Found on the Known Globe”), a significant Dutch anthropological series written by Martinus Stuart and illustrated by the talented Dutch draughtsman Jaques Kuyper. The scene depicts two Fuegian individuals seated beside a fire in a dense coastal forest. Their lightly worn garments, simple basketry, fishing spear, and shell drinking vessel all emphasize survival within a challenging environment characterized by wind, cold, and scarce resources. Kuyper’s hand-applied color brings warmth and expression to the figures, and the careful shading of the rocks, foliage, and fire creates an intimate and atmospheric composition conveyed with the Romantic sensibility of the era. Stuart’s ambitious publication was part of a growing Enlightenment effort to document global cultures through travel accounts, early anthropology, and missionary reports. Although presented through an early 19th-century European lens, the plates are now valued as important historical records of cultures encountered during the age of exploration and colonial expansion. Strong visually and desirable as a stand-alone decorative piece, this print also appeals to collectors of world cultures, South American history, and early ethnographic illustration. Fine work from this series has become increasingly scarce on the market. Condition: Very good for age. Strong impression and bright original hand-coloring. Light toning and a few minor spots confined to the margins. Wide margins preserved. Framing Tips: A natural wood or dark walnut frame with a warm-white museum mat will complement the earth tones and preserve the historical feel. A floating mount to reveal the plate mark is also recommended. Technique: Hand-colored copper engraving Maker: Jaques Kuyper, after Martinus Stuart Publisher: Johannes Allart, Amsterdam, c.1805 See less
