Authentic 1916–1917 Solid Brass Bed with Documented New York Provenance
This rare full-size solid brass bed was manufactured in the Greenpoint metalworking district of Brooklyn, New York, one of the primary U.S. centers for brass bed production during the early 20th century. Greenpoint factories supplied brass beds directly to hotels, boarding houses, and commercial lodging establishments throughout New York State during the 1910s.
The bed retains multiple original factory markings, including:
• FEB 23, 1916 rail production date
• June 1917 U.S. patent stamp
• “GREENPOINT” district mark
• “4/6” (early code for Full size)
• “SATIN” (the original factory finish specification)
• Batch/Order number: 4984 (indicating commercial, not residential—distribution)
**These markings confirm this bed was produced during the World War I manufacturing period and prepared for commercial shipment.
During the 1910s, brass beds manufactured in Brooklyn were routinely shipped by barge or freight up the Hudson River to Albany and surrounding cities. Historical shipping and procurement records from this period show that hotels in Schenectady, Albany, and Troy sourced commercial-grade brass beds from Greenpoint manufacturers.
Schenectady’s hospitality industry expanded rapidly between 1915–1920 due to the growth of General Electric. Hotels, including the well-documented Van Curler Hotel, were furnished with brass beds ordered in batches and shipped directly from downstate suppliers.
The batch-style marking (“4984”) is consistent with beds produced for hotel installations rather than private households.
We were informed that this bed originally came from the Hotel Van Curler in Schenectady. While independent verification is not available, the manufacturing location, batch numbering, and known distribution routes of the era closely match the type of commercial orders supplied to that hotel and other major lodging establishments in the Capital Region during the WWI period.
Restoration
The brass has been professionally cleaned and restored to match its original satin brass finish, a soft, warm sheen specified by the factory. No lacquer or modern coatings have been applied.
Condition
This WWI-era bed is structurally solid and complete with its original steel rails. As expected from a 100+ year-old antique, there are a few small dents, surface markings, and age-related imperfections in the brass. These are cosmetic only, do not affect stability, and are consistent with normal use and movement over the course of a century.
The bed presents beautifully overall and retains the authentic character expected of a piece from this era.
