is a technique in which a pattern is carved into the painted surface using a chisel (sword), lacquer is rubbed into the recesses created after the carving, and gold or silver leaf or powder is pushed into it. It is called ``chinkin'' because the gold sinks into the hollow.
On the other hand, in ukikin, the painted surface is not carved, but is decorated by drawing a pattern with lacquer and applying gold powder or pasting foil. Compared to chinkin, the gold layer is thinner and less gold is used.

輪島塗Wajimanuri
Wajimanuri is a type of lacquerware produced in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Characteristics: A cloth made of a mixture of raw lacquer and rice paste is pasted onto the wood to strengthen it. This lacquerware is made with an emphasis on ``durability'' and is coated with many thick layers of a base mixture of raw lacquer, rice paste, and fired diatomaceous earth. See less
