Incredible pair of late 18th/early 19th century Japanese Edo period six panel folding byobu screens featuring Harimaze decoupage, applied paintings and drawing. Each screen is an amazing tapestry of applied art scenes in a grand collage style display. The work features paintings from various Japanese ateliers: Tosa School, Ukiyo-e, Kano school, Maruyama-Shijo, Haiga, and poems in both Chinese and Japanese. Various subject matter including nature scenes, birds, and flowers (Kacho-ga) and illustrations from classic literature like "The Tale of Genji". The large screens feature dramatic, radiant gold leaf backgrounds set in black lacquered frames with silk brocade borders. Numerous signatures and artist seals on the paintings. Well preserved with a beautifully aged patina commensurate age and use. Sold as a pair. From an estate in Beverly Hills, CA.
