Etching on laid paper. A finely executed etching by Spanish artist Ricardo de Los Ríos, celebrated for his refined intaglio work and historical genre scenes. This plate, dated 1872, captures the eccentric fashion of the Incroyables — a Parisian subculture that emerged during the Directoire period (1795–1799). The composition depicts two elegantly dressed figures in exaggerated attire, posed on a neoclassical terrace. De Los Ríos renders the flamboyant details with great precision: the gentleman’s towering cravat, broad bicorne hat, and cane, alongside the lady’s elaborate feathered hat and voluminous gown. Their theatricality epitomizes the satire and extravagance associated with post-revolutionary Parisian society. The sheet shows a fine impression with strong contrasts and delicate linework, typical of de Los Ríos’ mastery. Such works are rare on the market and highly sought after by collectors of 19th-century French prints, fashion caricature, and historical costume etchings. Excellent impression, with light time toning consistent with age; generous margins. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
