Lithograph on wove paper. Signed and dated in the stone lower right. This lithograph by Auguste Raffet, one of the most celebrated French lithographers of the 19th century, depicts a Tatar settlement in Crimea. The scene shows a cluster of thatched-roof houses dispersed across a wide open plain, with figures engaged in conversation and daily activity. The expansive horizon and atmospheric rendering of the sky lend the composition a sense of both grandeur and ethnographic detail. Raffet, renowned for his ability to blend documentary precision with artistic sensibility, here captures the essence of Crimean village life during the mid-19th century. His prints were widely admired for their ability to transport European audiences into distant geographies and cultures with immediacy and narrative clarity.
