Etching after a work by Henriette Browne (1829–1901), published on "L'Art", Paris, in 1877. This finely executed etching by Edmond Hédouin reproduces Henriette Browne’s orientalist composition, Les Oranges (Souvenir d’Égypte). The intimate scene shows two Egyptian children seated on the ground: one, turned away, rests against a basket filled with oranges, while the other, shirtless and adorned with a necklace, carefully peels a fruit. Around them, simple wicker baskets filled with produce emphasize the everyday nature of the subject, while the quiet dignity of the children elevates the composition into a poetic reflection on daily life in Egypt. Hédouin’s precise etching style conveys the delicacy of Browne’s original painting, highlighting both the children’s expressions and the textures of the woven baskets and stone background. The print is further enriched by its connection to Browne, one of the few female Orientalist painters of the 19th century, celebrated for her sensitive and ethnographically attentive depictions. Published in L’Art, the influential French art periodical, which brought together leading artists and printmakers of the 19th century. This impression, engraved by Hédouin and printed by A. Salmon, belongs to the 1877 issue. Strong impression on thick laid paper, with full margins. Some overall toning and light foxing, consistent with age, particularly in the sheet’s outer areas, but the plate remains sharp and well-preserved. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
