A highly atmospheric frontispiece from Raffet’s celebrated travel album documenting his expedition through Southern Russia, Crimea, Hungary, Wallachia, and Moldavia. The composition shows a group of officers and travelers gathered on the deck of a ship, evoking the sense of exploration and cosmopolitan encounters characteristic of 19th-century travel imagery. Published by Gihaut frères, lithographed by Auguste Bry, this sheet reflects Raffet’s virtuosity in rendering both figures and setting with precision and liveliness.
