This antique and fascinating animal-like figure of a domestic water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), an important symbolic and functional animal in Southeast Asian agriculture, is crafted from solid wood. This 19th-century work of Asian folk art stands out for its imposing size, measuring 63.5 x 60 x 85 cm. It stands on studded legs and features a superb patina. The missing tail and signs of wear consistent with a late 19th-century date attest to its antiquity and authenticity.
The work depicts a carved wooden buffalo in a standing position. It has been restored with minimal additions to the horns and their attachment, along with those of the legs and ears. A bronze bell around its neck symbolizes its importance in rural life. The animal sculpture rests on long legs and is suitable for both tabletop and floor use, adding a touch of decorative Asian folk art charm.
