mid 20th Century East Turkestan Asian Samarkand Rug
rug no. j2469
size 4' 10" x 9' 7" (147 x 292 cm)
Samarkand rugs from east turkestan are typically found in a long and relatively narrow format with simplistic spacious designs great for American home décor. For thousands of years these lands of arid steppes, deserts, and brutal mountain ranges were traversed by caravans of merchants and traders from China to Western Europe along the silk route.
These unusual carpets of Central Asia display themes from many oriental cultures. Perhaps the most evocative of all the East Turkestan motifs is the pomegranate, signifying prosperity.
