This stunning vintage African wooden fish puppet created by the Bozo people of Mali was hand carved from one block … Read more This stunning vintage African wooden fish puppet created by the Bozo people of Mali was hand carved from one block of timber, it dates from around 1980 and features a wonderful geometric diamond carved design to the sides representing fish scales. It's in excellent condition with a lovely polichrome red and yellow colour with rich patina and ware. Very large and comes on its own wrought iron stand. Originates from the Bozo tribes people of Mali a fishing tribe known for their colorful puppets and sculptures, often used in performances during harvest and fishing celebrations.
The puppets, like this fish, are used to teach young Bozo people about their culture, traditions, and values.
This fish is a spiritual tribute to Faro, the spirit of water in the Bozo tradition.
In excellent condition with a rich patina consistent with its age. from an Italian private collection brought back from Africa in the 1980's. See less
