Cheminées du louvre – architectural engraving by louis-pierre baltard, 18th century
an impressive 18th-century architectural engraving titled cheminées du louvre, drawn and engraved by louis-pierre baltard (1764–1846). This finely executed print depicts the elaborate chimney designs of the louvre palace in paris, inspired by decorative motifs from the reigns of françois i, louis xiii, and louis xiv. Baltard’s masterful technique captures the grandeur and ornamentation that define french royal architecture of the renaissance and baroque eras. The composition showcases monumental chimneypieces richly adorned with sculptural reliefs and classical ornament. At the center appears a radiant sunburst face representing apollo, the sun king—an emblem closely associated with louis xiv. Surrounding medallions, garlands, and architectural carvings emphasize the exuberant decorative vocabulary of the french court. Each element is rendered with remarkable precision, reflecting baltard’s architectural training and his passion for documenting the nation’s artistic heritage. Louis-pierre baltard was a renowned french architect, engraver, and professor, known for his detailed engravings of architectural subjects and for his work on major parisian projects, including the panthéon and the early design concepts that would later influence the baltard family’s legacy in french architectural design. His engravings remain invaluable records of 18th-century neoclassical and ornamental design, admired for their clarity, technical perfection, and scholarly value.
