Drawn by max tilke and printed by ernst wasmuth a.-g. In berlin, the image provides an excellent overview of both male and female religious orders, showing the distinct habits, colors, and symbolic features associated with each community. With its soft yet detailed hand-coloring, the print presents a valuable record of catholic religious life from the late medieval period through the baroque and early modern eras. The upper register features clergy members and nuns from various orders. At left stands a jesuit priest dressed in the traditional black cassock and square biretta. He is followed by a high-ranking secular cleric in purple choir robes, identified by his hat and long-trimmed garment. Three different nuns appear next, each wearing the distinct colors and habits of their respective communities: a franciscan or poor clare sister in brown, a carmelite nun in blue and white, and a dominican nun in black and white. The careful rendering of these habits reflects the structured visual identity of catholic religious life. The lower register depicts additional monastic traditions. A carthusian monk in a white hooded habit appears first, followed by a benedictine or poor clare nun in a dark blue cloak. A cistercian monk in a simple white robe stands next, emphasizing the order’s austerity. At the center is a symbolic representation of st. Teresa of ávila, wearing the carmelite habit with a crown and staff, highlighting her role in the reform of her order. A benedictine or augustinian abbess completes the grouping, identifiable by her black veil and cross. Collectors of religious art, historical costume, or catholic iconography will appreciate the accuracy and elegance of this plate. It offers excellent decorative value for libraries, studies, offices, and ecclesiastical or academic interiors. Condition report: good antique condition with soft toning and minor edge wear. A few faint margin spots consistent with age. Image area clean and color strong. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: a cream or parchment mat enhances the soft palette of browns, blues, and whites. A gilt frame adds formality and highlights the ecclesiastical character, while walnut or oak provides a warm, scholarly appearance. Floating the sheet preserves the imprint and creates a museum-quality presentation.
