Laroque, published in paris around 1797. This print originates from grasset de saint-sauveur’s monumental costume series costumes civils actuels de tous les peuples connus, an ambitious ethnographic project illustrating traditional dress from across the globe in the late 18th century. The engraving depicts a woman from navarre, the historic region straddling the pyrenees between france and spain. She stands gracefully in full traditional attire, characterized by a long purple gown, richly embroidered bodice, and a vertically striped apron adorned with gold embellishments. A deep red sash encircles her waist, while a green shawl drapes elegantly over one arm. Her elaborate headdress—featuring a tall, pleated linen cap—reflects regional basque influences and the distinctive styles of pyrenean mountain communities. Jacques grasset de saint-sauveur (1757–1810), a french diplomat, ethnographer, and artist, produced one of the most comprehensive visual surveys of world costumes at the end of the enlightenment. His works were valued not only for their artistic precision but also for their documentary importance, offering european audiences a glimpse into the customs and clothing of distant cultures. The engraving’s fine lines and luminous hand-coloring by j. Laroque enhance the texture and richness of the costume, making this piece both historically significant and visually captivating. Condition report: excellent impression with vivid original hand-coloring. Light toning to the margins, faint handling marks consistent with age, and a visible plate mark surrounding the image. The colors remain bright and well-preserved. Framing tips: this elegant print pairs beautifully with a dark wood or gilt frame and a cream or soft green mat. Floating the print is ideal to highlight the fine border and plate mark. Technique: hand-colored copperplate engraving maker: j. Grasset de saint-sauveur (designer), j.
