Rare 18th-century Derby porcelain candlestick, modelled with two finches nestled within a dense floral bocage above a spaniel on a scrolling rococo base. The bell-flower nozzle and pastel enamels reflect the Pale Family period (1756–1769), known for its luminous colours and delicate modelling.
A comparable piece is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Candlestick, c.1765, Derby Porcelain Factory), with further related examples in the British Museum and the Bowes Museum. Candlesticks of this type represent one of Derby’s earliest attempts to merge narrative sculpture with decorative function, expressing the lively Rococo spirit of mid-18th-century English porcelain.
