Schneider in 1769. Appearing as plate xlii in tome xi, this plate is one of the most visually appealing and unusual quadruped portraits in the entire series. It was drawn by jacques de sève, buffon’s principal artist, and engraved with fine precision by c.j. Fritsch. The schneider edition is especially admired for its refined colouring and strong impressions, and this example shows all of those qualities. The zebu is presented in full profile on a grassy rise, displaying its characteristic hump, slender legs, lightly curved horns, and beautifully mottled coat. The hand colouring is particularly attractive: the spotted pattern of the fur is rendered in soft browns and creamy whites, with subtle shading that gives the animal a lively and natural appearance. De sève’s sensitive use of line captures the animal’s posture and anatomy with clarity, creating a portrait that is at once scientifically accurate and aesthetically engaging. The background setting features a cluster of buildings with red roofs, gently rolling hills, and a sky washed in soft tonal blues—an elegant landscape that enhances the exotic nature of the subject without overwhelming it. This combination of naturalistic rendering and picturesque scenery is a trademark of de sève’s work and is one of the reasons buffon’s animal plates remain so beloved among collectors. The zebu, originating from south asia and parts of africa, was of particular interest to 18th-century naturalists due to its adaptability, hardiness, and important role in agriculture. Buffon’s highlighted the species’ strength, climate resistance, and characteristic hump, which fascinated european readers. This plate provided one of the earliest widely distributed visual records of the zebu in western scientific literature. Today, le zébu remains a favourite among collectors of buffon prints because of its graceful composition, distinctive markings, and warm hand colouring. It suits both traditional interiors and contemporary spaces that appreciate refined natural history art. Over 250 years old, this engraving survives in remarkably fresh condition. Condition report: very good for age. Light marginal toning and small scattered foxing, mostly outside the image. Minor handling marks typical of 18th-century paper. Strong impression with a visible plate mark. Hand colouring even and well preserved. No tears or repairs observed. Framing tips: a warm ivory or sand-coloured mat brings out the beautiful colouring of the zebu’s coat. Frames in walnut, natural oak, or dark brown complement the palette. For a more modern presentation, a thin black frame adds contrast, while floating the sheet highlights the wide margins and plate mark.
