It presents a detailed and animated view of the port of Marseille, one of France’s most important Mediterranean harbors. The scene captures the bustling daily activity of merchants, sailors, and townspeople along the quayside, framed by elegant architecture and a vividly colored sky. At the water’s edge, dockworkers unload barrels and sacks, while finely dressed figures stroll or conduct business on the promenade. Ships of various sizes occupy the harbor—some anchored, others setting sail toward the open sea. The background reveals the medieval towers guarding the entrance to the Old Port, including the recognizable silhouette of Fort Saint-Jean. The right side of the composition is dominated by a grand neoclassical building with ornate sculptural decorations, symbolizing the prosperity and maritime pride of Marseille during the reign of Louis XV. Daumont was one of the most prolific Parisian publishers of the *vues d’optique*, perspective views designed for optical viewing devices such as zograscopes. These prints were prized for their vivid hand coloring and illusion of depth, offering 18th-century audiences virtual journeys through Europe’s great cities. The warm tones of pink, blue, and gold in this example are particularly striking, suggesting a Mediterranean sunset over the old harbor. Condition report: Very good condition with strong coloring and a clear impression. Some light creasing and small spots of color staining typical for the period, but the sheet remains clean and bright with a visible plate mark. Framing tips: Ideal for framing in a gilded or natural wood frame with an ivory or pale blue mat to highlight the soft tones of the sky and architecture. Floating the print to display the plate mark adds visual depth. Technique: Hand-colored copper engraving (vue d’optique) Maker: Daumont, Paris, circa 1760 See less
