A museum-clean pair of Japanese Satsuma vases by Hododa, Yokohama, c. 1895–1915. Ivory ground with fine craquelure, lavishly painted in enamels and gilt in the kinrande manner. Alternating scenes of birds in blossom and cranes beside water are bound by rich textile-pattern gold bands dotted with mon.
Bases with Shimazu crest above Hododa cartouche (one rubbed).

Condition
Outstanding. Enamels and gilding remain bright; one minute, filled touch to a footrim, invisible on display. No cracks or repairs under UV. Old inventory marks visible under UV.
