These are works of art that do not merely occupy space — they inhabit it with soul.
This magnificent statue of Saint Paul, standing at an impressive 137 cm (53.9 in), was carved entirely by hand in solid oak at the end of the 18th century, a period when French sacred sculpture reached one of its most inspired expressions.
The Apostle is depicted in all his spiritual majesty:
his gaze serene yet intense, his long draped robe falling in generous folds, and his right hand firmly holding a genuine forged-metal sword — the timeless symbol of divine truth and the power of the Word.
In his left hand rests the Book of Epistles, the emblem of his writings that shaped Christian thought for centuries.
Artistic & Historical Significance
Saint Paul, once Saul of Tarsus, was transformed by a blinding revelation on the road to Damascus. from persecutor, he became one of the greatest heralds of the Gospel — a symbol of conversion and faith illuminated by grace.
This sculpture captures that metamorphosis: the face reflects both human struggle and divine enlightenment.
The oak wood, chosen for its durability and warmth, bears a noble patina softened by time. Traces of its original polychromy remain visible — subtle and poetic, like the echo of ancient prayers.
