origin and history
founded in munich in 1847 by joseph-gabriel mayer, the mayer & cie workshop was elevated to the status of royal institute of christian art in 1882 by king ludwig ii of bavaria. The workshop, renowned for its stained glass and church sculptures, worked for the most prestigious sanctuaries in europe and received the title of pontifical institute in 1892. This piece belongs to this period of excellence, where each work was conceived as a union of faith, beauty, and technical perfection.
the sculptor johann nepomuk roth, active between 1870 and 1899, was one of the most celebrated creators of the mayer firm. He designed several models of the virgin mary, characterized by a gentle expression and a balance of lines reminiscent of italian statuary.
