Charming large maneki-neko from Japan, made of papier-mâché and completely hand painted.
Dimensions: height 40 cm, width 24 cm, depth 25 cm.
The cat is richly decorated with floral motifs in black, red, gold and blue, combined with the cheerful face of a Japanese god of good fortune and golden coins with calligraphy referring to luck, prosperity and wealth. The painting is bold and colourful, with strong graphic lines typical of 1950s papier-mâché folk art.
Its age shows in the form of craquelure, small cracks, dents and natural wear to the paint layer, as visible in the photos. These traces of use give the piece an authentic, well-loved character.
In any interior this is a playful, decorative statement piece: on a sideboard, in a shop window, on top of a cabinet or in a child’s room or workspace, this large maneki-neko instantly brings colour, personality and a touch of Japanese good luck.
