Follower of Giovan Battista Salvi, known as "il Sassoferrato" (1609 - 1685)
Madonna with the Sleeping Child
Roman painter, 18th century
Oil on canvas
Dimensions: canvas 64 x 50 cm, framed 76 x 62 cm.
This delicate depiction of the Madonna adoring the Child displays all the human dimension and sweetness of a maternal atmosphere: Mary holds the sleeping child in a tender embrace, who caresses her cheek, wrapped and protected by her cloak and even a corner of her mother's veil.
The pictorial style and composition hark back to the circle of Giovan Battista Salvi, known as "il Sassoferrato," who distinguished himself specifically for this subject, with the Virgin immortalized in a humble and profoundly earthly pose, depicted with simple white, red, and blue tones and delicate interplays of nuance on the faces and hands.
This iconographic prototype was so successful that it became the subject of countless devotional works throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly appreciated by private commissions given its marked sweetness and formal perfection, particularly in the faces.
Born in the Marche region, Salvi developed his practice in Rome, following the dictates of classicist sacred painting from the Bolognese school of Reni, Carracci, and Domenichino, but managing to develop a distinct and therefore distinctive style.
In very good overall condition, with some small, scattered restorations and some peeling of the painted surface. Housed in a beautiful gilded frame.
