karl böhmer (1955, spittal/drau, austria) is a contemporary austrian artist whose work spans sculpture, installation, architecture, and site-specific projects. After completing his studies at the staatliche kunstakademie düsseldorf (1979–1985), he received a travel scholarship from the academy in 1985 and the prestigious peter-mertes award from the kunstverein bonn in 1986. He subsequently benefited from several work grants and project grants, including the working grant from kunstfonds e.v., bonn (1988), and a project grant from the stiftung kunst und kultur nrw (1995).
in 1995, he was the official representative of germany at the "interart" exhibition in mexico city and participated in the competition for the holocaust memorial in berlin (1995/96) together with j. Cladders, h. Döhmen, and g. Penker. Between 1996 and 1998, he worked on the reconstruction of the marienberg church in neuss. His studies and travels took him to persia (1997) and italy, where he maintained a studio in pieve di camaiore/pietrasanta (2000–2001).
böhmer has participated in numerous competitions and public projects, including those for the museion in bolzano (2001), the umweltbundesamt in dessau (2002), and the federal ministry of education and research in berlin (2013). Among his more recent works are the "caffè valéry" project in florence (2016), an artist residency at raketenstation, insel hombroich (2019), and a project grant from kunstfonds e.v., bonn (2020).
