This work is a painting untitled by the artist andrea santarlasci 1995. A work created using mixed media (drawing, graphite, black and blue pencil, ink, and egg tempera on plywood). Here one of the artist’s favorite themes emerges, the tree: two cypresses that obey laws different from those of nature, suspended in an empty space.
andrea santarlasci was born in pisa in 1964, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the fine arts academies of venice and carrara.
his work is elegant, evocative, poetic, and complex. He employs a variety of techniques, with a preference for installation, alongside drawing, photography, sculpture and video.
he creates site-specific works in which the place itself inspires and generates the artwork. Each location holds hidden images and secrets that the artist seeks to reveal, though never fully. Observation of the site precedes any intervention: it is a crucial preliminary phase. Places possess both visible and invisible energies, and the artist intends to establish a dialogue with these energies. It is not only the space that hosts the exhibition, but also the exhibition that hosts the space. The artwork seems to emerge from the site, as if it had always been inscribed within it; the artist’s role is to make it manifest.
santarlasci often installs his works in locations that are not usually accessible to the public, to reveal little-known or overlooked spaces to viewers.
he has exhibited in internationally renowned exhibitions and shows, as well as in public and private spaces in italy and abroad, including: the national gallery of modern and contemporary art, rome (it); 12th international architecture exhibition, la biennale di venezia, venice (it);
