One jar is warm beige clay with a clear glaze; the other is grey glazed.

Dimensions: height 38 cm and 36 cm, diameter 27 cm.

The brushwork is lively and spontaneous, with pleasing variation in ink density and small glaze marks—the wabi-sabi look you want. The grey jar bears calligraphy on two sides; the beige jar shows three bold merchant-style inscriptions. Such jars were used in the first half of the 20th century for sake or mirin and were often marked with large decorative characters referring to contents, origin, or vendor.

A very decorative pair: striking on the floor, on a low table, or repurposed as sturdy flower vases with a branch or grasses.
