Jean Duplessi-Bertaux (1750–1818) after Emmanuel de Ghendt (1738–1815) Etching, c. late 18th – early 19th century A refined etching representing ancient Roman motifs excavated from the Circus of Caracalla in Rome. The composition brings together a variety of archaeological subjects: two oil lamps decorated with equestrian scenes, circular medallions with charioteers, a tall obelisk, and at the bottom, a striking allegorical female figure seated between four unicorns, framed by draperies. Jean Duplessi-Bertaux, an accomplished draftsman and engraver known for his revolutionary and antiquarian subjects, collaborated here with Emmanuel de Ghendt, another French engraver of the period, to document archaeological discoveries for publication. The plate belongs to the rich tradition of antiquarian prints that sought to disseminate newly uncovered vestiges of classical civilization to a wider European audience. The present impression, finely executed with sharp lines and delicate shading, captures both the academic rigor and the romantic fascination with antiquity that characterized late 18th-century printmaking. Condition: Toned sheet with scattered foxing and minor waterstains, consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
