reading table made of solid walnut, adjustable in height and inclination.

the table top is mounted on a sturdy, multi-profiled column. The table top can be adjusted to the desired height by means of a solid rack set into the column.
a cast-iron fitting mounted under the table top ensures that the table top can be tilted in both directions. It is locked in place with a brass wing nut.
the top has removable bookends on both sides. A further desk recessed into the top and which can be set upright may have been used to hold smaller sketches.

the original manufacturer's label proves that the piece of furniture was made by leveson & sons in london.
leveson & sons, founded in 1849, specialised in the manufacture of mechanically adjustable furniture and in the production of wheelchairs and reclining chairs for medical and domestic purposes during the 19th century.
the table offered here was originally designed as functional occasional furniture - possibly for use next to a bed or armchair. The design of the base with an off-centre column allows the table to be conveniently moved up to a sitting or reclining surface without getting in the way.
an almost identical model is documented in a leveson & sons advert from 1903 (see attached photo).
