Lithograph, c. 1840s Signed and dated in the plate. Image dimension: 23x21 cm. An evocative lithograph by Auguste Raffet, depicting a tall defensive tower rising starkly against the horizon, identified as the “Tour à Rhotaye.” At its base, rustic wooden structures and stone fortifications evoke the fortified landscapes of Wallachia, a region Raffet explored extensively during his Eastern European journeys in the 1840s. Two horsemen ride along a riverside path in the foreground, their cloaked silhouettes emphasizing the romantic and somewhat austere atmosphere of the scene. Part of Raffet’s celebrated Balkan series, this lithograph is not only a study of architecture but also a testament to the historical presence of fortresses along strategic waterways. Raffet’s ability to combine architectural precision with narrative detail made his works highly valued both as artistic achievements and as documentary records. Condition: Scattered foxing in margins; image well preserved and sharply printed. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
