Commissioned in 1967 at the height of the summer of love, these iconic works were first published by look magazine in the u.s., stern in germany, the daily express in the u.k., and vogue in italy. Richard avedon, renowned for redefining fashion and portrait photography, here captured the beatles in radiant pop colors that came to symbolize the band’s psychedelic phase. With hallucinogenic hues and surreal detailing (harrison’s mystical third eye, lennon’s hypnotic glasses, ringo’s dove, mccartney’s flowers), the series embodies both the countercultural spirit of the 1960s and the enduring visual identity of the beatles.
