In 1866, the lawyer antonio salviati, in cooperation with english financiers, founded the vetreria salviati & c. Manufactory. The manufactory initially bore the english name 'venice and murano glass and mosaic company'. It produced mouth-blown glass objects and mosaics, achieving great success in both areas.
in 1889, the company was acquired by the camerino family, who ran it until the end of 1980.
during the first world war, production was initially halted and then resumed in the early 1920s. The 'modern' products were featured several times in the magazine domus in 1930. Two years later, the manufactory collaborated with the artist dino martens, who designed the company's most interesting pieces, which stand in stark contrast to his work in the 1950s.
the painter mario deluigi also collaborated with the manufactory under the pseudonym guido bin. A series of yellow vases with fused mosaics and figurative decorations was presented at the 1932 venice biennale. Production was limited to a small number of pieces due to the complex manufacturing process.
after world war ii, the manufactory's mosaics were exhibited regularly at the biennale each year. In 1958, a collaboration took place with luciano gaspari and romano chirivi. The resulting pieces won the manufactory an award at the international universal exhibition in brussels, and in 1962, a series of monochrome works designed by sergio asti won the compasso d'oro award for industrial design.
in the 1970s, the manufactory collaborated with external artists such as claire falkenstein, ward bennet, and teff sarzin. Objects by salviati & c. Can be seen in the liège museum of glass, the kestner museum in hanover, the museum of modern art in new york, the corning museum of art in new york, and the harretz museum in tel aviv.
in the 1980s, the camerino family sold the manufactory to an italian financial group.
