Etching on wove paper. Signed and dated in the plate lower left. This detailed etching by Auguste Raffet, one of the foremost French lithographers and etchers of the 19th century, depicts a Tatar family traveling on horseback through a rugged Crimean landscape. The central figures — women veiled in traditional dress, accompanied by men, children, and pack animals — convey both dignity and hardship, framed against a backdrop of dense foliage and a rocky path. Raffet was renowned for his masterful draughtsmanship and his ability to capture the vitality of everyday and historical scenes with narrative precision. Here, his attention to costume, gesture, and environment reflects the broader 19th-century European fascination with the Orient and ethnographic subjects. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
