Lithograph on papier de chine appliqué, realized by Jules Bertrand (1823-1887) after Victor Orsel (1795-1850). It depicts the dramatic biblical episode from the First Book of Samuel, in which King Saul, desperate for guidance before battle, consults the Witch of Endor to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel. The ghostly figure of Samuel appears at the right, shrouded in mist, raising a hand in admonition. Saul, dressed in classical armor, collapses to the ground in fear and despair, while the witch recoils holding a torch, and two of Saul’s attendants stand terrified in the shadows. The style reflects the Romantic and historical approach of mid-19th-century French religious art: highly theatrical composition, flowing drapery, and intense contrasts of light and dark. Not signed, as issued. In very good condition, with vivide contrasts and a fresh inking. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
