The technique used to achieve this rich optical effect is called filigree and requires highly skilled artisans. This photo frame is made of yellow and white Murano glass, layered with Venini crystal, Murano. Fine yellow and white lines wrap around the crystal glass frame like very thin threads. "Filigree is a traditional technique that began in the 16th century. This technique requires highly skilled artisans. They use long glass rods which they layer, intertwine, and fuse. Each rod is wrapped around a glass cylinder and blown into shape. At the end of this process, the master glassmaker must keep each line of color separate, with the same thickness and curvature around the glass, as quickly as possible before the temperature drops. The result of this technique is almost hypnotic because it produces a perfect net effect. It is signed on the brass backing."
