An impressive pair of antique cast iron andirons / firedogs, dating from the 1920s, with attractive hammered brass finials. They have a great stance, almost life-like, resembling an eager pair of dogs! The coppery coloured brass is bright and reflective, and the ironwork clean, almost matt black. Andirons are a pair of supports either used to support a grate in an open fireplace or to hold logs for burning. They elevate the wood, allowing air to circulate underneath, which promotes more efficient combustion and less smoke. The tall vertical part at the front, which can be highly decorative, also serves to prevent logs from rolling out of the fireplace and into the room. So, they're an essential item if you're planning to use your fire - and a great decorative detail on which to stack logs if you're not!
