In 1930, the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) designed a sofa for the "The Apartment for the Subsistence Minimum" exhibition in Helsinki. It could be converted into a regular bed by folding down the backrest. This elegant and timeless sofa was manufactured then, as it is today, by the Embru company and distributed by Wohnbedarf AG. Our example was produced in the 1960s. It features a chrome-plated tubular steel frame and black Bakelite armrests.
The original innerspring mattress was completely refurbished by a Zurich upholstery studio and is therefore in excellent condition. It has been reupholstered in a gray wool fabric from the Scandinavian company Kvadrat. The Hallingdal fabric is made of 80% wool and 20% polyamide. with a Martindale count of 100,000, it has an unusually high abrasion resistance. The chrome-plated tubular steel frame has been professionally polished. The mechanism works perfectly. The Bakelite armrests were also refurbished and treated with linseed oil. After all this work, the sofa is in more than perfect condition. Visually, it looks absolutely new. Length 200 cm, depth when unfolded 90 cm. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
