An over-the-top florid silver plate butter dish from the late 19th century that has all the parts.
The silver is pretty much gone but you can still see the repousse work and design. The lid has a design of birds, butterflies, urns and wreaths. The lid has a very Aesthetic Movement look and finial with double circular medallions. The base has florid flanges. There is an insert to keep the ice from the butter. The included knife is more Art Nouveau but is still very floral as well.
An incised mark on the base reads HAMILTON MFG Co QUADRUPLE PLATE, and the production number is 30. The knife has a different manufacturer. It has the mark R. C. Co.
MEASUREMENTS
9 in (22.9 cm) long x 7 in (17.8 cm) deep x 6 ½ in (16.5 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 10.1 oz.
CONDITION
There are no breaks, cracks, or repairs. There is wear, however, from age and usage. The butter insert has a wavy edge and has much wear. The edge of the lid is a little bent and so easily slips from resting in the well perfectly. There is a small dent by one of the knife prongs. Both butter dish and knife have lost most of their silver.
A delightfully extravagant butter dish with an abundance of character.
