This newly restored and reupholstered lounge chair is a defining example of Swedish Art Moderne style, crafted circa 1945–1949 by the renowned Bröderna Andersson in Ekenässjön, Sweden. Swedish Art Moderne in the 1940s is characterized by the marriage of Streamlined Moderne forms—aerodynamic, curved and fluid—with warm, natural materials. It is less industrial than its American counterpart and more organic, bridging the gap between the high glamour of the 1930s Art Deco and Functionalist (Funkis) eras and the Mid-Century Swedish Modern of the post-war era.
Designed within the context of Swedish "Folkhemmet"—a living standard that prioritized high-quality, intimate furnishings for the modern home—this sculptural armchair was crafted to encourage relaxation and comfort. The frame is sculpted from solid warm golden birch, featuring the distinctive open-spindle armrests that became a hallmark of high-end Swedish furniture in the late 1940s. While constructed of birch, it has been finished to perfectly match the warm elm tones of its counterpart sofa.
This chair has undergone a complete restoration to better-than-new condition. The interior has been entirely rebuilt, including reworking of the eight-way hand-tied springs—the traditional gold standard for longevity, new padding—and completely rebuilt cushions for exceptional comfort. It is now reupholstered in a tactile light taupe bouclé fabric. In a nod to its Art Moderne lineage, the organic curves are accentuated by rich saddle leather piping and matching leather button pulls.
NOTE: This listing is for the lounge chair only. The matching restored sofa (constructed of elm and upholstered in a coordinating Opuzen woven fabric with the same leather welt trim and buttons) and end table shown in the photographs are available for purchase in our other listings.
