A unique and tangible piece of British history, this high-relief medallion is more than a decorative object—it’s a salvaged artifact from one of London’s most iconic architectural monuments. The striking inscription reads:
"Temple Bar: Erected 1672, Demolished 1878; This Effigy From It Was Struck From the Lead Formerly on the Roof."
Beautifully detailed in high relief, the medallion not only commemorates the Temple Bar but visually depicts the structure in all its architectural grandeur. Encased under glass and set in a thick, solid brass frame with a top mount for wall hanging, the piece is both weighty and dignified, weighing 2 pounds and measuring 5 inches high, 4.5 inches wide, and 1 inch deep. Very good condition, light signs of age-related wear. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
About Temple Bar:
Originally erected in 1672 by famed architect Sir Christopher Wren, Temple Bar once stood as the ceremonial gateway between the City of London and Westminster. For over two centuries, it served as the site where the monarch would pause and request permission to enter the City—an enduring symbol of London’s civic identity. The structure was dismantled in 1878 to ease traffic congestion and its stones preserved. Some of its original materials, like the roof lead used for this medallion, were repurposed into commemorative items such as this one.
Whether displayed in a library, study, or collection of architectural artifacts, this rare piece is a compelling link to London’s layered past—a true collector’s treasure and conversation starter.
A rare opportunity to own a documented fragment of architectural history.
