An iconic creation of WMF’s Jugendstil era, this sculptural pewter centerpiece embodies the poetic grace that defined the firm’s early 20th-century artistry. Designed circa 1910 by Albert Mayer, WMF’s renowned artistic director, the piece was originally conceived as a visiting card tray and remains one of the most coveted forms in the company’s oeuvre—famously featured on the front cover of the authoritative WMF reprint, Art Nouveau Domestic Metalwork from Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik 1906 (Antique Collectors’ Club, 1988), reference p. 167.
At its heart stands a delicately modeled nymph, her posture serene as she tenderly cradles a dove—a symbol of harmony and gentle beauty. Her presence rises like a tree from the earth and an organically sculpted, leaf-shaped tray emerges behind her, making the piece equally functional and decorative. Whether used to present sweets or displayed as an artistic focal point, the composition exemplifies the lyrical naturalism that defines WMF’s most sought-after Jugendstil designs. Marked with a model number and an angel from the rear.
Dimensions:
• Leaf tray: 11" wide, 7.5" deep, 5.5" high
• Nymph: 8.25" tall
• Base: 5" wide x 5.5" deep
• Weight: 3.58 lbs
A superb addition to any Art Nouveau collection, this centerpiece offers both rarity and undeniable sculptural elegance
