It’s time to make space for the unexpected. This 1950s original Mexican Equipale barrel chair is 100% handcrafted in Mexico. Known for its rustic charm and recognized worldwide. Made from centuries old tanning and dying processes, It is crafted from branches bent to form a barrel back frame and reinforced with cedar planks or slats. All natural materials, pig skin, cedar strips, twigs and branches. The cedar strips create a lattice pattern on the base. Stamped: Hencho en Mexico. The backs and arms are pigskin. The chair is both comfortable and a work of folk art. The word Equipale comes from the Nahuatl term icpalli, which means “chair for gods”. These chairs were originally reserved for nobility and high ranking individuals as a symbol of power. In excellent condition. The is a 2” x 3” area under one arm where the pigskin is torn (see photo). The chair is very sturdy with 80 years of period wear and patina, consistent with age and use but no serious damage. Weighs 40lbs.
