Zinn—a distinguished Austrian workshop later acquired by the renowned German firm
WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik). Celebrated for its elegant lines and
sculptural refinement, this piece embodies the height of early 20th-century European
metal artistry.
At its center stands a graceful, elongated female figure, her long flowing hair seamlessly
transforming into six sweeping candle arms. Each arm culminates in a delicately
modeled flower-form candle cup, a hallmark of the organic motifs that defined the Art
Nouveau movement. The composition evokes movement, femininity, and natural
harmony—an ideal balance between functional design and expressive sculpture.
The underside bears a circular maker’s mark featuring a rear-facing flying angel with
trumpet, along with the letters A, B in the lower right quadrant—closely resembling the mark of German metalsmith Albert Bodemer, who worked contemporaneously and
whose designs share kinship with this refined aesthetic.
As with the most collectible WMF-associated works, the candelabra showcases the
technical mastery and design innovation that made the firm an international leader in
pewter and silver-plated metalware from the late 19th century through World War I.
