Elevate your desktop or library with this handsome Victorian brass adjustable book rest, dating to circa 1860 and featuring a beautifully detailed rendering of the British Royal Coat of Arms. Exceptionally crafted, this rare piece blends function with fine decorative artistry—perfect for use as a book stand, display easel, or distinctive accent in a traditional or eclectic interior.

The central shield is quartered with the classic heraldic emblems of the United Kingdom:

England represented in the first and fourth quarters by three passant guardant lions

Scotland in the second quarter with its rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory

Ireland in the third, shown with the harp

Behind the shield rests the emblem of the Order of the Garter, bearing its famed motto “Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense.” Above it sits the lion crest wearing the St. Edward’s Crown, and below, the national flora—thistle, Tudor rose, and shamrock—symbolize Scotland, England, and Ireland.

The crowned English lion and chained Scottish unicorn flank the shield as supporters, and the scroll carries the monarch’s motto “Dieu Et Mon Droit.”

Beautifully cast with crisp detail and a warm aged patina, this adjustable book rest is both a functional object and a compelling piece of 19th-century heraldic art. Missing a book slot part at the front bottom.
