Bring atmosphere and coastal charm to any study, library, or living space with this antique set of three English School maritime paintings, circa 1880, each beautifully rendered in oil on canvas and presented in richly carved giltwood frames. United by subject matter yet distinct in mood and palette, the trio offers a harmonious exploration of seafaring life across different times of day and weather conditions. Each work may also be sold separately if preferred.
The first painting, attributed to the circle of George Gregory (1849–1938), depicts fishermen gathered beside beached sailboats at low tide. Soft, warm light washes across the sands as figures tend to nets and gear, while vessels with ochre-toned sails rest quietly in the shallow coastal waters. The composition captures the serene rhythm of daily labor on the English shoreline.
The second painting presents an evocative misty seascape, stamped verso by a Stoke Newington supplier associated with artist L. Rudolph. Here, tall-masted ships and smaller sailing craft drift almost motionless across a glasslike harbor. The hazy sun hangs low over a pale blue horizon, dissolving into vaporous light. An overturned rowboat and a few weathered pilings in the foreground give the scene a poetic sense of stillness and maritime solitude.
The third work, signed G.W. Ward and dated 1887, depicts a dramatic harbor at sunset. Warm gold breaks through thick clouds as sailboats with reddish-brown sails glide across shimmering water. A solitary figure tends to a small rowboat in the foreground, while wooden pilings lead the eye toward the glowing horizon. The strong contrasts and atmospheric sky make this the most theatrical of the set.
Together, the three paintings form a cohesive suite that traces the shifting moods of the sea, from bright morning labor to misty calm to fiery evening light. Each canvas shows overall craquelure and expected patina, and all remain in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
