This exceptional pair of marked antique porcelain vases dates to the early Qing
Dynasty, circa 1723, and originates from the renowned kilns of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi
Province—the historic heart of imperial Chinese porcelain. Crafted from a refined blend
of kaolin and petuntse (“China clay”), the vessels embody the purity, translucence, and
strength that defined the finest porcelain of the era.
Each vase is richly adorned with masterfully hand-painted Famille Verte decoration,
featuring two primary narrative panels:
A Scholar in His Study — symbolizing wisdom, refinement, and intellectual
pursuit.
A Mother with Her Child — an intimate scene representing harmony,
tenderness, and familial devotion.
Surrounding these scenes are additional auspicious motifs executed with delicacy and
cultural intention: Decorated around the body are smaller panels of a scholar’s treasure objects which signify education & achievement,
A landscape with pine tree which because it is ever green, is regarded by the Chinese as an emblem of longevity.
The reverse is of a blooming peony tree which is called "Hua Wang" or "King of Flowers" and
is a symbol of wealth, love, affection and feminine beauty.
Flying above are a pair of butterflies which represent joy and happiness.
Lastly are a pair of mandarin ducks which is an emblem of marriage happiness and fidelity. As this water—fowl manifest, when paired, a singular degree of attachment to each other.
Decorated all round on the black ground are the lotus and scrolls which is an
emblem of purity and perfection as it is a thing of beauty in contrast to the
mud in which it grows.
Dimensions: 12.5" tall, top & bottom diameter 3.5", middle diameter 5.25", weighing 1.69lbs. & 1.87lbs. These collectible vases are in the Famile Verte colors.
