This exceptional pair of 19th-century hand-painted porcelain vases beautifully reflects the refined artistic spirit of the Aesthetic Movement, dating circa 1870–1880. Crafted in an elegant bottle-form silhouette, these vases embody the era’s devotion to intricate decoration, harmonious color palettes, and the romantic blending of historical and literary themes.
Each vase features a finely detailed, hand-painted portrait of two of Italy’s most celebrated poets: Dante Alighieri, immortalized for The Divine Comedy, and Ludovico Ariosto, famed for his epic Orlando Furioso. Their expressive likenesses are set against a rich, radiant golden background, framed within a soft pink border adorned with delicate green and white floral motifs — a beautiful marriage of portraiture and ornamental design.
The reverse of each piece offers a thoughtfully painted still life composition, depicting a book and quill, symbolic of the enduring literary legacies of the poets. While the vases are complementary in theme and form, each features subtle individual variations, enhancing their uniqueness as a matched pair.
Ornate gilt handles and delicate beaded accents further elevate their luxurious character. Measuring 6.5 inches high, 4 inches wide, and 1.75 inches deep, these vases carry a pleasing presence without overwhelming a space. Both remain in very good antique condition, with only light surface wear, a tiny chip at the base of each, and one retaining an old cork stopper internally. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Though unsigned, these vases are a superb example of high-quality 19th-century porcelain craftsmanship — refined, expressive, and thoughtfully executed.
Perfect for display on a mantel, bookshelf, or in a finely curated cabinet, this rare pair offers both decorative beauty and literary charm. A true conversation piece for collectors of fine porcelain or admirers of classical European artistry.
