Launched in 1939 and named after old-fashioned ground tobacco, it turned expectations upside down with a glass bottle shaped like a gentleman’s smoking pipe.

The idea was inspired by René Magritte’s famous painting La Trahison des Images and its cheeky line, “This Is Not a Pipe” (Ceci N'est Pas Une Pipe). That playful contradiction became the heart of Snuff, Schiaparelli’s first and only men’s fragrance. Originally sold in packaging which mimicked a tobacco box, it was a hit—and so iconic that new versions of the pipe bottle followed for years.

The scent has been described as Chypre fragrance for men. Designed by Elsa Schiaparelli, it famously featured a perfume bottle shaped like a smoking pipe. A Chypre scent, it blends notes of lavender, pine, leather, and oakmoss. The fragrance was featured in the James Bond film "Thunderball" (1965), used by villain Emilio Largo.
