Chinese painted pottery model of a horse typical of Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). Not verified scientifically, but has the hallmark features and materials for this era.
These figures were common tomb statues, meant to accompany the deceased in the afterlife.
The sculpture is gray/buff earthenware, with remnants of white and red polychrome.
A simplistic rendering of a horse, with a strong, arched neck and an alert confident expression.
These "heavenly horses" symbolized power, military strength, and wealth in Chinese society.
The head and body were often molded separately, sometimes with wooden legs attached with pegs.
Beautiful as décor, with a sophisticated edge sure to impress those with an appreciation of ancient art and antiquities.
