Antique Qing Dynasty Chinese Embroidered Silk Civil Rank Badge Panel (1st Rank Crane) – 19th Century
This striking antique textile features an authentic Qing Dynasty (mid–late 19th century) embroidered silk civil rank badge, known as a Buzi. These square insignia were worn on officials’ robes to denote their status within the imperial hierarchy.
This particular badge displays a crane, the emblem of a 1st-rank civil official, rendered in fine multi-colored silk threads and gold couching work. The crane—distinguished by its red cranial cap—stands proudly on a rock surrounded by Li-Shui (ocean wave) patterns, scrolling clouds, peonies, auspicious bats (fu, symbolizing fortune), and longevity peaches. The bird faces toward a full red sun, indicating the panel was designed for a male official’s back badge (there is no central slit).
The design and workmanship closely parallel examples in major museum collections, including a nearly identical 1st-rank badge in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession No. 30.75.968).
This exquisite piece has been professionally framed in a layered mat and gilt wood frame, making it a stunning display work suitable for collectors or decorators alike.
